Bergamo is a town to rediscover and reevaluate. The high town, on the inside of the 1500s ramparts, is a background to the town in the plane. The low town is the most modern nucleus of the town.
Besides the centre, the picture gallery of the Carrara academy is a must to visit. The Picture gallery has about 2000 paintings of the main Italian and foreign schools between the 1400s and the 1700s.
The high part of the city is the old historical centre. Surrounded by walls, it presents itself as an independent city. Along a walking itinerary one can visit the Venetian Podestà Building, the Palazzo della Ragione, the cathedral. Its construction began in 1459 and finished, along with various incidents, only in 1886.
The Basilica of S. Maria Maggiore is of the year 1000. Different things in Bergamo suggest the style of Venetian domination.
For a religious itinerary you can go to Sotto il Monte, just a few kilometres from Bergamo. It is the natal town of Pope Giovanni XXIII. Besides the 1400s church of S. Maria, one can visit his natal house and the summer residence of his cardinal period, which is now a museum.
